Eugene B. Chang,
University of Chicago, USA

Dr. Eugene B Chang is the Martin Boyer Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago who studies environmental (e.g. diet, xenobiotics), evolutionary and ecological drivers that determine host-microbial interactions of the intestine. His investigations employ in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo (experimental and clinical) approaches to define specific mechanisms of action that underpin states of eubiosis and dysbiosis. Dr. Chang was an active participant in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Human Microbiome Project and established many of the microbiome core facilities that are used by investigators in the Biological Science Division (BSD) at the University of Chicago. He has been over the past 25 years the Director of the NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases) P30 Digestive Disease Research Core Center (DDRCC) at the University of Chicago and has served as a member of the NIDDK Advisory Council, past-President of the Gastroenterology Research Group, and of the governing board of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Chang created and is currently the Director of the University of Chicago Microbiome Medicine Program. He also has an extensive record of successful mentorship over 4 decades as the Principal Investigator and Program Director of a NIDDK training grant (T32) in Digestive Health and Diseases, life-time Master of the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators at the University of Chicago, and recipient of numerous mentorship and teaching awards.
